Just Stop Oil

Just Stop Oil supporters paint Stonehenge orange

Activist group demands government stop approving new fossil fuel projects

Warns of inevitable 15C warming within two years

Just Stop Oil supporters have decorated Stonehenge in orange powder paint in a bid to raise awareness of the climate crisis and to demand that the UK government stop approving new fossil fuel projects.

The group, which recently caused disruption by blocking oil terminals, said the action was a “desperate attempt” to get the government to take action on climate change.

“We are facing an inevitable 15C of warming within two years from April and the government will licence over 100 new oil and gas projects in the North Sea,” the group said in a statement.

“This is madness. It is criminal. It is suicidal. Just Stop Oil supporters are demanding that the incoming UK government commit to stopping all new fossil fuel projects and to supporting a just transition to a clean energy future.”

The action has been condemned by some, who say it is disrespectful to damage a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

However, Just Stop Oil said it was necessary to take desperate measures to raise awareness of the climate crisis.

“We understand that this action will cause anger and upset, but we believe that the urgency of the climate crisis demands that we take action now,” the group said.

“We are asking the public to support us in our demands for a just transition to a clean energy future.”
